Super Saver: Why do strikers get all the credit when the keepers prove the most value?

The season is beginning to draw to a close, football fans. Aye, we will soon be left with no football for a couple of months, leaving a big hole in the heart (although the Euros will help fill this gap, even without Scotland there!) And while teams continue to vie for the title and attempt to escape relegation, some already have their fates consigned to them.

Aston Villa, a storied club with great fans, are going down. They are stranded at the foot of the table, and it is of no surprise when you look at their stats. The club are conceding five shots on target on average every game, compared to having just three for themselves. Now you need a great super saver to turn that into a positive. The club need to remember that fact. While strikers get all the credit, goalkeepers win the points for their teams. And if you have a leaky defence, you especially need a good goalkeeper.

Sorry Villa, but all this mismanagement is going to cost you a lot of money.

How the table works

Here at Scottish Friendly we thought we would highlight just how important keepers are to a team, after all they are savers in their own right! We imagine each game without keepers and take the number of shots on target by each team as the result. By looking at it this way, we can see which goalies have been busy winning their team points, while also finding out which ones are holding their team back.
