Scottish Friendly brings Patrick Ness to Renfrewshire

Press release – 30th October 2010

Chaos walks round Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire schools

Continuing to bring the most exciting authors direct to young readers around the country, the next Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour will see award-winning literary sensation Patrick Ness touring round six Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire secondary schools from 23rd to 25th of November 2010.

The London-based writer will be discussing his Chaos Walking trilogy (The Knife of Never Letting Go, The Ask and the Answer, and Monsters of Men) which has won numerous awards including the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, the BookTrust Teenage Prize and the Costa Children's Book Award. Monsters of Men has been shortlisted for the 2010 Children's Book of the Year in the Galaxy National Book Awards to be announced on November 10th.

Patrick was born on a Virginia army base in the United States. His father was a drill sergeant in the US Army and the family moved many times as he grew up. As a child he entertained himself by making up stories but was too embarrassed to show anyone. He admits to being a goth as a teenager (as much of a goth as he could be in Tacoma, Washington) but is definite that he’s grown out of it. Although he was accepted to film school he gave this up to study writing.

The Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour is run by Scottish Book Trust, Scotland’s leading agency for the promotion of literature, reading and writing. The tour aims to bring the best children’s authors directly to young readers around Scotland bringing literature alive in the way that meeting the person who crafted the words can only do.

The collaboration between Scottish Friendly and Scottish Book Trust was recently recognised by Arts & Business Scotland who awarded the partnership the Young People Award (23rd September 2010).

Calum Bennie, marketing manager at Scottish Friendly, which has sponsored the touring programme for over 11 years said: “I’m always thrilled when we’re able to announce each Children’s Book Tour author and we’re so pleased to be bringing one of the most talked-about authors to young readers in Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire for these dates.”

Chris Newton of the Scottish Book Trust added: “It is our immense pleasure to have the phenomenal Patrick Ness on the Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour and to be visiting pupils in West Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire. It is our mission to inspire young people across the country through reading, writing and imagery and Patrick’s amazing Chaos Walking trilogy of books fit perfectly with that.”
