Children’s laureate and internationally celebrated author, Anthony Browne, will inspire primary school children from Fife to Aberdeenshire in the forthcoming Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour.
The tour, which will take place from 9-14 May, begins with an exclusive family event run at the National Galleries in Edinburgh. Anthony will lead an interactive workshop where children will be encouraged to use their eyes, ears and imagination to create pictures and games.
The children’s laureate will then embark on a tour across Fife, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Angus to spread the magic of reading and writing to local school children.
Anthony has penned nearly 40 titles including the visually stunning Gorilla (1983) and Voices in the Park (1998). Talented in both writing and illustrating children’s books, he has been awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal and the Kurt Maschler Emil Award. He was the first British illustrator ever to win the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2000.
The Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour is run by Scottish Book Trust, Scotland’s leading agency for the promotion of literature, reading and writing. The tour aims to give children across Scotland, even those in the most rural and remote areas, access to the best UK children’s authors. A dedicated Facebook page has been set up to keep fans up to date with the latest authors’ news and tours at www.facebook.com/Meet-Our-Authors.
The Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour has visited all 32 Scottish local authorities in the last three years, bringing the best children’s authors directly to their readers.
Calum Bennie, marketing manager at Scottish Friendly, which has supported the touring programme for more than 11 years, said: “This tour provides an exclusive platform for children across Scotland to meet some of the most inspiring authors and illustrators of our time. Scottish Friendly remains devoted to nurturing literacy in Scotland’s young people and this latest tour with Anthony Browne is guaranteed to inspire children across Scotland.”
Jasmine Fassl of the Scottish Book Trust added: “We are greatly honoured to welcome the Children’s Laureate to lead this tour, which is set to be one of the most exciting to date. Our mission is to inspire children across the country through reading, writing and imagery and Anthony’s work fits perfectly with our mission. It’s a great way to introduce children to some of the country’s most popular and highly acclaimed authors.”
