Press release - 8th March 2013

Primary school children in Perth and Kinross will be left in stitches this month after receiving a master class in make believe mayhem from award winning children’s author Peter Bently.

As part of the first Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour of 2013, run by Scottish Book Trust, 300 lucky primary school pupils will be invited into Peter’s world of wit and wonder.

The best-selling author will host ten school events during the week-long tour, which will begin in Perth and Kinross on March 18th at Kinloch Rannoch and Kirkmichael Primary schools. On 19th March the tour continues to St Madoes and Robert Duncan memorial primary school, followed by Milnathort and Forgandenny Primary school on the 20th. Peter will then make his way to Stirling for the remainder of the tour.

Peter began writing children’s fiction in 2004, and has since published over 40 books. In the nine short years that Peter has been writing, he has received various major awards including the Roald Dahl Funny Prize (for Cats Ahoy!), the American Library Association Notable Book (for King Jack and the Dragon) and has two books (King Jack and the Dragon and The Yoga Ogre) long listed for the Kate Greenaway Medal 2013.

Commenting on his upcoming tour, Peter said:

"I am thrilled to be coming on the Scottish Friendly Children's Book Tour, and I'm looking forward to having fab pirate fun with Cats Ahoy! and farmyard frolics with Farmer Clegg and his friends."

Chris Newton, Children’s Events Manager at Scottish Book Trust added:

"We are delighted to be able to bring Peter Bently, his pirate-cats and his farmyard superstars to so many rural schools on this Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour. Peter’s readings and his animal-mask workshops will illustrate to the children just how much pleasure books can bring."

Calum Bennie, Marketing Manager at Scottish Friendly, said:

"We’ve been very fortunate to have some first class authors involved in the book tour and Peter Bently is no exception. The point of these tours is to inspire the next generation of authors and we’re sure Peter will help to do that in his sessions. The book tour is always fun for both the authors and the children as it gives both of them the chance to really get involved in the storytelling process."

The Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour is run by Scottish Book Trust, Scotland’s leading agency for the promotion of literature, reading and writing and is sponsored by Scottish Friendly, Scotland’s largest mutual with 150 years of experience. The main aim of the Tour is to encourage children’s love of literature through inspirational author visits, which bring their books to life.
