Hull Primary Pupils Book-in for a Jolly January

Press release - 13th January 2014

January in Hull will be far from the Norm as primary school pupils prepare to welcome children’s author and all-round funny-man Jonathan Meres into their schools.

Over 1450 lucky primary school pupils will be invited into Jonathan Meres’ hilarious World of Norm during his tour. He will talk to pupils from 11 schools, including nine schools in Hull between 13 and 16 January.

Jonathan is the award-winning Scottish author of several children’s books including the hugely popular World of Norm series of books which are written, designed and published in ways that minimise obstacles to struggling, reluctant or dyslexic readers. A former stand up comedian and Perrier Award nominee, Jonathan started writing in 1994 and now has 19 books to his name.

Commenting on his upcoming tour, Jonathan said:

"I'm really looking forward to my trip to Hull and Sheffield on the Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour. Partly because I don't get out much. But mainly because, as a writer, there's simply no substitute for actually meeting your readers and interacting with an audience face to face - something which, in an age of social networking, is becoming increasingly rare."

Calum Bennie, Communications Manager at Scottish Friendly, sponsors of the tour, said:

"This is the first time the Scottish Friendly Children’s Book tour has been to Hull – and we’re delighted to bring the world of reading and writing to children in the East Riding of Yorkshire. We can’t wait to see the pupils’ – and teachers’! - reactions to this engaging writer. We’re sure they’ll be talking about it for weeks after!"

Beth Bottery, Schools Events Manager at Scottish Book Trust, organisers of the tour, added:

"Jonathan’s particular brand of humour is just what’s needed to clear up the post-Christmas blues – his events are full of laughs, groans and madcap humour, often inspiring even the most reluctant readers to pick up a book."

The Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour is run by Scottish Book Trust, Scotland’s leading agency for the promotion of literature, reading and writing and is sponsored by Scottish Friendly, Scotland’s largest mutual with 150 years of experience. The main aim of the Tour is to encourage children’s love of literature through inspirational author visits, which bring their books to life.
