Move over Black Friday, there’s a new shopping frenzy in town and it goes by the name of Singles’ Day.

What is Singles’ Day?

Believe it or not, Singles’ Day has been around since the 1990’s where it began in China. The day acts as a celebration for single people – think Valentine’s day for the unattached – and it’s now become the world’s largest online shopping day.

Singles’ Day takes place on the 11th of November.  That’s one-one-one-one – get it? Using only the number 1, means Singles’ Day is, indulgently, all about number 1 (A.K.A you!).

Singles’ Day was discovered by retail powerhouse Alibaba, the Chinese equivalent of Amazon, in 2009. The trailblazers launched “Double 11” deals just in time for the boom of online shopping. Last year consumers in China spent an estimated £14 billion on 11/11, outperforming both Black Friday and Boxing Day sales across the rest of the world.

Since Alibaba took over the holiday in 2009, they have successfully challenged and transformed traditional perceptions of Singles’ Day. Consumers are encouraged to spend and make the most of Alibaba’s incredible savings regardless of their relationship status. Basically, 11/11 has become the perfect excuse to indulge in some guilt-free, treat yourself spending.

…I bet you’re all wondering why you’ve only just heard about it!

Another way to treat yourself

While it can be tempting to splurge on “deal days” such as Singles’ Day, it’s important not to fall victim to rash purchasing on items you don’t really need (we’re looking at you with those bright pink shoes or shirt at the back of the cupboard, you know, the thing you said you’d wear all the time)!

Joking aside, there are many ways to treat yourself on “deal day” like investing in your future. As one of the largest financial mutuals in the UK, we truly understand the importance of saving and investing – to put a little away for you. It’s a way of investing now for a special treat in the future; you can find out more about how we can help you do that here. Please note that stock market investments can fall as well as rise so you could get back less than you have paid in.
