My Ethical Select (Junior ISA) invests in a fund linked to an index, only of ethical global companies, aiming to deliver a positive impact. Companies with little, if any, direct exposure to things like non-renewable energy, gambling, tobacco and companies not meeting the UN Global Compact Principles. It gives your money access to the growth potential of investing in a more responsible way that can be mutually inclusive of your values, too.

But please remember, your own views on ethical investing may change meaning the fund over time may no longer meet your own personal views of ethical investing.

It doesn't take much to get started

You can invest in a My Ethical Select (Junior ISA) with Scottish Friendly from just £10 a month but if you want to push your budget further, you can. You can also make lump sum payments from £50, or you can combine monthly payments with a lump sum. It's up to you.

You can also transfer in from another Junior ISA provider if you wish.

Make the most of your child's Junior ISA allowance

The current tax-free Junior ISA allowance means that you can put a total of £9,000 into a My Ethical Select (Junior ISA) in the current tax year.

This is the total amount you can invest across both types of Junior ISA for your child. So, any amount already saved in a Cash Junior ISA for them in this tax year will reduce the amount you can invest in a My Ethical Select (Junior ISA).

You're in control

You can increase, decrease, pause and restart the amount you're paying in at any time. Keep in mind that if you're aiming to grow your investment for a specific goal for your child, pausing your payments will mean you take longer to reach it.

You can also choose to automatically raise your monthly payment amount by a set percentage every year - e.g. 2.5%, 5% or 10%. This is called your yearly payment increase rate.

Of course you can change this rate at any time and remove it should you need to.

About investments

Unlike a Cash Junior ISA or traditional savings account, you don't earn interest on the money you pay in.

Instead, an Investment Junior ISA - like My Ethical Select (Junior ISA) - puts your money to work using the long-term growth potential of the stock market.

When you set up a My Ethical Select (Junior ISA), your money will be invested in an investment policy within a Scottish Friendly Junior ISA. The policy then invests in our International Ethical fund, which you can read more about in the 'What funds can I invest in?' section.

Anyone can pay money in

Once My Ethical Select (Junior ISA) has been set up by a parent or guardian anyone can pay money in. Grandparents, relatives or family friends may decide to contribute at birthdays or Christmas, knowing they’re helping build something your child will benefit from in the future.

In fact they can even set up policies within the My Ethical Select (Junior ISA) to help them keep track. As long as everyone stays within the child's Junior ISA allowance, as many policies can be added as you like.

It’s important to remember that the My Ethical Select (Junior ISA) belongs to the child and only they can withdraw the money. So all payments made into the investment plan are essentially a gift to the child and cannot be returned. The child can manage the account from age 16 but won’t be able to take money out until their 18th birthday.

Because the investment is linked to the stock market it’s impossible to tell you the exact return your child may get in the future - but we can give you a rough idea.

Up to £100 cashback into their Junior ISA on us

For a limited time only, between 4 March and 30 April,  we'll pay up to £100 into the Junior ISA  for your child after you start investing.
