How it works

Any Junior ISA needs to be set up by the child’s parent or guardian, but with us, an award winning provider, we can help you give them the nudge they need to start a Junior ISA.

Important things to think about
About investing in this Junior ISA
- A My Choice policy within a Scottish Friendly Junior ISA is a medium to long-term investment of at least 5 years and ideally 10.
- As with all investments, it's important to be aware that the value can go down as well as up, so your grandchild could get back less than you've paid in.
- Money in a My Choice policy within a Scottish Friendly Junior ISA belongs to your grandchild. They can only withdraw it when they reach 18.
- Once set up, your money is invested in an investment policy. This sits within their Junior ISA, which initially invests in the Unitised With-Profits fund. Thereafter the parent or guardian can switch funds at any time.
- All correspondence about the Junior ISA is provided to the parent / guardian.
About tax and Junior ISAs
- Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances. Tax law may change in the future.
- Tax-free means the policy grows free of income or capital gains tax (other than tax that's already paid i.e. on dividends from UK shares).
- There are two different types of Junior ISA - Investment Junior ISA and Cash Junior ISA - and your grandchild can only have one of each.
- The current Junior ISA limit is £9,000 and this is the total anyone can invest across both types of Junior ISA for your grandchild in each year.

How much can I invest?

It doesn't take much to get started

Everyone can start investing from £10 a month, £50 lump sum or more, when your grandchild’s parent or guardian sets up the Junior ISA. What’s more there’s no commitment required from them to continue paying in, meaning it could cost as little as £10, to allow you to get started! As long as everyone’s payments combined stays within your grandchild’s yearly Junior ISA allowance - which at £9,000 overall, shouldn’t be hard for most of us!

Flexible payments

You can increase, decrease, pause and restart the amount you're paying in at any time, giving you full flexibility. There’s also the option of applying a yearly payment increase rate - increasing your monthly payments by a percentage set by you each year, to give them a little bit more.
How will my money be invested?
About the Junior ISA

Unlike a Cash Junior ISA or traditional savings account, your grandchild won't earn interest on the money you pay in. Instead, our Investment Junior ISA puts your money to work using the long-term growth potential of the stock market.

To get the Junior ISA started, we’ll offer your grandchild’s parent or guardian a straightforward, easy start option of investing in one fund – the Unitised With-Profits fund, via our My Easy Choice (Junior ISA). Once they apply, we’ll send the welcome pack, with information on the choice of other funds that are available via our Junior ISA.

When you start investing, you’ll add a My Choice policy which we like to call 'pot' within the child's Junior ISA. This will invest in the fund or funds chosen by your grandchild’s parent or guardian. You can read more about the funds available via our Product Guide, should you want to give them a nudge in the direction of the fund you’d like to invest in, as well!

But please note that only the parent or guardian has control over choosing and switching the fund and they can do this at any time.

Pay into your own unique pot for them

A unique feature of our Junior ISA means that you add your own ‘pot’ of money to it. You even get to name your pot for your grandchild, from you (so they really know where the money came from!) or for what you hope they’ll spend it on.

Every penny you pay in belongs to your grandchild, giving you peace of mind that they’re the only ones that can withdraw it. And don’t worry, whilst they’re able to manage the account from age 16, they won’t be able to take any money out until their 18th birthday. So you have plenty of time to teach them to enjoy a little, and be sensible with the rest!

Managing their investment

We're sure you'll want to check up on your contribution to your grandchild's policy with us every now and again. That's why we created the My Plans online tool where you can view the policy and manage your payment.

With the My Choice policy and My Plans you can:
