Angus Pupils Hunger for Author Workshops
High school children in Angus are set to sink their teeth into a writing workshop with a difference in December when bestselling Young Adult author Matt Whyman visits the area. As part of the fifth Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour of 2013 over two thirds of Angus High Schools have been invited to host a workshop with Matt in his darkly comic world of teenage fiction.
Matt is a bestselling author and resident agony uncle for both Bliss Magazine and BBC Radio 1's The Surgery with Aled. Writing for both adults and young adults, Matt explores various themes in his novels, memoirs and advice columns. His previous young adult books have been shortlisted for many prestigious awards and he will be focusing on his latest critically acclaimed work, The Savages, which is a deliciously macabre look at modern family life.
Matt will visit six schools during the tour of Angus, beginning with Arbroath High School on Wednesday 4 December. He will then stop off at Monifieth High School, Brechin High School, Webster's High School, Montrose Academy and finish off the action-packed three days in Forfar Academy on Friday 6 December (please find full event listings below).
Commenting on his upcoming tour, Matt Whyman said:
It's a great honour to visit schools across Angus and celebrate books and writing with the students. Thanks to Scottish Friendly and Scottish Book Trust, I'm looking forward to lively conversation and hope to inspire young writers of every ability. I struggled at school, but it was the pen and paper that rescued me. I'm now a firm believer that learning to express yourself confidently with the written word will take you places in life - as I hope my trip to Scotland demonstrates!
Calum Bennie, Communications Manager at Scottish Friendly, said:
We’ve had some fantastic authors take part in the tour this year and Matt Whyman is no exception. I’ve no doubt the children will be thoroughly entertained by his stories. When we set up the Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour the idea was to inspire the authors of tomorrow and having first class literary talent available to present to kids across the UK is a great way to achieve that goal.
Beth Bottery, Schools Events Manager at Scottish Book Trust added:
Scottish Book Trust is delighted to have Matt Whyman on the Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour. His books are mouth-wateringly good, while at the same time giving his readers a lot of food for thought. Pupils in Angus can look forward to a lively event with plenty of debate and discussion.
The Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour is run by Scottish Book Trust, Scotland’s leading agency for the promotion of literature, reading and writing and is sponsored by Scottish Friendly, Scotland’s largest mutual with over 150 years of experience.
