Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour heads for the Western Isles

Children in the Western Isles will be given a literary treat this week as award winning children’s author Marcus Sedgwick tours local schools as part of the Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour 2013.

Over 700 children will be entertained by the award winning author over the course of the week, as the team tour primary and secondary schools in Lewis, Harris, Barra and Uist – full details below.

A former bookseller and children’s publisher, Marcus Sedgwick began his career as an author in 1994, winning the Branford-Boase award with his first novel, Floodland, in 2000. Marcus has gone on to write a string of major novels which have seen him nominated for over 30 other awards including the Booktrust Teenage Prize and the Blue Peter Book Award.

Marcus had this to say of the upcoming tour:

It’s great that this tour reaches children no matter what their location and I'm really thrilled to be visiting so many pupils on The Western Isles as part of the Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour. I hope to inspire some of the children to have a go at writing their own novel and I look forward to reading their efforts.

Beth Bottery, School Events Manager at Scottish Book Trust which runs the tour added:

Marcus has been involved with children’s books for nearly 20 years so we’re very excited to have him as part of the tour. The kids will love his interactive story telling sessions and are sure to be inspired!

Calum Bennie, Communications Manager at Scottish Friendly, said:

We’ve been exceptionally lucky to have been able to take some first class authors into UK schools as part of the Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour and Marcus is yet another impressive name to add to that list. The aim of the tour is to inspire the authors of tomorrow and I’ve got no doubt that Marcus’s sessions will fire the imagination of the children on the islands. Marcus has amassed an impressive amount of awards and award nominations over his career so he’s perfectly placed to show them how it’s done.

The Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour is run by Scottish Book Trust, Scotland’s leading agency for the promotion of literature, reading and writing and is sponsored by Scottish Friendly, Scotland’s largest mutual with over 150 years of experience. The main aim of the Tour is to encourage children’s love of literature through inspirational author visits, which bring their books to life.
