Author, illustrator and graphic novelist, Laura Ellen Anderson is set to visit schools in the Western Isles between 15 – 19 May.
London based Laura is a hugely exciting talent in the world of children’s writing and illustration. She is the creator of the popular Evil Emperor Penguin graphic novel series and the illustrator for many books including the Witch Wars, My Brother is a Superhero, as well as books by Peter Bently, Cerrie Burnell and many others.
Laura first came onto the scene with a production of picture books for younger children alongside writing stories for the phenomenally successful Phoenix weekly comic. Her first graphic novel, Evil Emperor Penguin, came out in 2015. The long-awaited follow up, Evil Emperor Penguin Strikes Back! was released in February 2017.
This tour will see Laura lead a bespoke and interactive comic workshop for P4-7 and S1 pupils that focuses on creating comic characters, plot and creating their own story boards.
Commenting on the tour, Laura said:
I'm very much looking forward to the Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour. I can't wait to share my enthusiasm for comics and creativity with the schools and hope that my comic workshops will inspire and encourage pupils to create their own stories comics, and of course, we’ll have lots of fun and silliness in the process!
The tour is sponsored by Scottish Friendly Assurance and organised by Scottish Book Trust. Every year schools in up to 12 local authorities in Scotland and two in England receive author visits to inspire a love of reading, writing and illustration. The tour visits both primary and secondary schools and has enthralled over 90,000 children since it began in 1998.
Commenting on Laura’s tour, Calum Bennie, Communications Manager at Scottish Friendlysaid:
Scottish Friendly’s Children’s Book Tour has brought thrilling authors to the Western Isles for almost 20 years. Laura Ellen Anderson’s tour this May means the Isles’ pupils are once again set to be enthralled by hearing about Laura Ellen’s approach to writing and illustrating and will hopefully get to roll up their sleeves to practice their own skills.
Scottish Friendly has sponsored the programme for the past 19 years, touring some of the finest children’s authors and illustrators including new Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell, Malorie Blackman, Michael Rosen, Jacqueline Wilson, Melvin Burgess, Steve Cole, Michael Morpurgo and Sophie McKenzie.
Thomas Jefferson, Schools Events Manager at Scottish Book Trust, which is organising the tour, added:
We are really looking forward to visiting schools in the Western Isles this May. This is a great opportunity for pupils to meet one of the UK's most exciting up-and-coming author/illustrators and Laura’s events are sure to excite and stimulate pupils - inspiring them to create their own comic strips and stories.
